1	Title:	James A. Garfield Family Papers, Series III

	Abstract:	James Abram Garfield was the twentieth president of the United States. He grew up in Orange, Ohio, graduated from Williams College in 1856, became president of Hiram College in Portage County, Ohio, and was a lay minister of the Disciples of Christ Church. He was elected to the Ohio Senate, and in 1858, married Lucretia Rudolph. Garfield served in the Civil War, as a lieutenant-colonel of the 42nd Ohio regiment. He was a major general when he resigned in 1863 to take a seat in the United States House of Representatives, where he served for 17 years. Nominated in 1880 as a compromise Republican presidential candidate, his campaign was conducted from Lawnfield, his Mentor, Ohio, home. Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881, and died September 19. He was survived by his widow, Lucretia Garfield, and by his children; Mary, who married his former secretary, Joseph Stanley-Brown, Irvin McDowell, Harry Augustus, who became president of Williams College, James Rudolph, a Cleveland attorney, Republican politician and member of Theodore Roosevelt's cabinet, and Abram, a Cleveland architect. The collection consists of correspondence, election tallies, essays, book inscriptions, legal papers, corporate records, scholarly and political notes, a minute book, scrapbooks, receipts, invitations, sympathy cards, calling cards, newspaper clippings, notebooks, pamphlets, phrenology charts, a eulogy, a presentation album, a resolution, a lock of hair, broadsides, programs, poems, sheet music, drawings, lithographs, and paintings.

2	Title:	Frances Payne Bingham Bolton Papers

	Abstract:	Frances Payne Bingham Bolton (1885-1977) was a Republican congresswoman from Ohio's 22nd congressional district. Bolton served on the committees of Indian Affairs (1940) and Foreign Affairs (1941-1968), participating in foreign aid hearings and conducting study trips abroad, including a trip to the Middle East in 1947 and one to Africa in 1955. She served as a congressional delegate to the United Nations Eighth General Assembly, and was involved with the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and helped organize the Accokee Foundation to protect the Potomac shoreline across from Mount Vernon. Mrs. Bolton had a long-time interest in nursing and nursing education and provided funds to establish the nursing school at Western Reserve University, as well as founding the Payne Fund to assist a variety of educational and other charitable programs. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, publications, clippings, etc. generated during, or pertaining to, Bolton's service in Congress. Included are bills and hearings, roll calls and voting records; Foreign Affairs & Indian Affairs committees papers, correspondence, reports, and geographical, foreign aid, embassy and State Dept. files; reports, memoranda, and printed material relating to the deptartments of State, Defense and Justice, the Post Office, as well as correspondence with the President; background files, diaries, reports, etc. re: Bolton's foreign relations travels, including her 1955 African trip; speeches, publicity files, campaign files & local political issues files; material re: her involvement with national Republican Party organizations; UN Eighth General Assembly materials; correspondence, etc. re: nursing and nursing education, the Accokeek Foundation, Mt. Vernon Ladies' Assn., Bingham Associates Fund, and other institutions she supported; and general correspondence, scrapbooks, etc. The collection primarily pertains to Mrs. Bolton's public life and reflects her political activities, as well as her personal and philanthropic involvement with various organizations.

3	Title:	Martin R. Hoke Congressional Papers

	Abstract:	Martin R. Hoke is an Ohio Republican who served in the United States House of Representatives for two consecutive terms from 1992-1996. Born in Lakewood, Ohio, he attended Western Reserve Academy and Amherst College. He earned a law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1980. Hoke won Congressional office in Ohio's 10th District in 1992. During his terms as representative, Hoke was a strong supporter of term limits on representatives and advocated a balanced budget. He sponsored or co-sponsored several bills, including the Fan Freedom and Protection Act, the Balanced Budget Act, and Contingent Fee Amendment. Hoke was defeated by Dennis Kucinich in his 1996 re-election campaign. The collection consists of bill information, campaign records, correspondence, expense reports, legislative activity guides, legislative profiles, newspaper clippings, press releases, speeches, volunteer information, and voting records.

	Abstract:	Frances Payne Bingham Bolton was a Republican congresswoman from Ohio's 22nd congressional district. Bolton served on the committees of Indian Affairs (1940) and Foreign Affairs (1941-1968), participating in foreign aid hearings and conducting study trips abroad, including a trip to the Middle East in 1947 and one to Africa in 1955. She served as a congressional delegate to the United Nations Eighth General Assembly, and was involved with the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and helped organize the Accokee Foundation to protect the Potomac shoreline across from Mount Vernon. Mrs. Bolton had a long-time interest in nursing and nursing education and provided funds to establish the nursing school at Western Reserve University, as well as founding the Payne Fund to assist a variety of educational and other charitable programs. The collection consists of transcripts of 16 interviews conducted with individuals who had known and worked with Frances Payne Bolton in her capacity as United States Representative from Ohio's 22nd District (1940-1968), as a member of the Republican Party, in her family and personal interests, or in her many philanthropic and advocacy endeavors. The interviews were conducted in 1989 by Leslie Anne Solotko as part of the project conducted at the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio, to process the papers of Congresswoman Frances Payne Bolton (MS 3943). Questions focused on Mrs. Bolton's personality and career; and her political, family, business, and personal interests. Interviewees included Viola Anderson, David K. Ford, Zelma George, Donald W. Gropp, Alice Hansen, Robert E. Hughes, Theodore F. Owen, H. Chapman Rose, Rozella M. Schlotfeldt, John Burns Simpson, Margaret Chase Smith, Robert Ware Strauss, Charles A. Vanik, Helen Wallace, Paul W. Walter, and Fred White.
